Artist’s Statement

Lying on the grass as a child, in a playpark in Sunnyside, I looked at the lines and negative spaces created by the Jacaranda branches overhead. Stark linedrawings of rabbits, crocodiles and military armoured vehicles against the bright blue sky, etched into my daydreams.

Nearly forty years later, my meditations on life is fuelled with the labour intensiveness of sculpture making processes. I find myself in a position to cast Jacaranda branches in bronze. These bronze branches are fundamentally linked to my memories. I believe our memories change as our knowledge and understanding expands. Slowly I make the memories I would like to have while constantly building durable artworks.

I collect and cast objects I have an aesthetic affinity with. The conceptual content not always immediately at hand, but the reasons for selection become evident as I forge ahead on this worldly journey. Presently I surround myself with these objects and artworks that contain my past and they point fingers at my future.
